Question No 7
Would you have any information on A2 Highland Chieftain visiting Glasgow Buchanan Street Stn in 1959/60. I rode behind this loco from Glasgow to Perth one Sunday during above years.
Answer
Thanks for your enquiry. I have several sightings of this loco in Perth and Haymarket locos worked regularly into Glasgow but into Queen Street. The only sighting I have in 1959/60 of this loco in Buchanan Street was on Tuesday the 1st September 1959 when it worked the 16.25 Glasgow - Inverness from Glasgow to Perth. I do not have a Sunday working into Buchanan Street for this loco.

Question 6
Can you possibly help I am trying to find out about what boilers were fitted to the A3 locomotives 60097 Humorist and 60039 Sandwich.
I was informed that 60097 Humorist had a 94A boiler up until 2nd February 1962 then it was changed to a 107 boiler. 60039 Sandwich had a 94A boiler up until 31st July 1959 than it was changed to a 107 boiler.
Do you have any information in your vast records to confirm this.
Answer
60097 Humorist went into works on the 29th December 1961 carrying boiler No 27044 which had been aquired from 60103 Flying Scotsman on 2nd September 1960 and was ex works on 9th February 1962 carrying boiler 29339 which had been on 60043 Brown Jack and which it carried until withdrawal.
60039 Sandwich went into works on 12th June 1959 carrying boiler No 29294 which it had aquired from 60063 Isinglass on 5th October 1957 and was ex works on 31st July 1959 carrying boiler No 27968 which was brand new. It carried this boiler until withdrawal.
The RCTS Locomotives of the LNER pt 2A has a mountain of information on the boilers but I am afraid that I do not have this information on my system

Question 5
My grandfather used to be a relief signalman based at Barnard Castle and I can remember V2s running during either the Aden or Suez crisis with troop trains from Barnard Castle to Darlington. Do you have records of any of the engines used? I wonder if a Pacific was ever allocated for this work - I seem to remember that the route was either RA8 or RA9
Answer
I only have records of 3 occasions when troop trains were taken through to Barnard Castle by V2s or Pacifics.
These are 25th August 1951 - loco 60800, 23rd May 1952 - loco 60158 and on 14th June 1952 - loco 60158 again but this time piloted by K1 62044.
I hope this is useful to you.

Question 4
I use to live near 51E shed and remember a A4 on shed the year would be 1946/7/8 I believe this was No. 7 Sir Nigel I wonder if you have any records of this.
Answer
The only A4 that I have on 51E Stockton shed was 60019 Bittern on the 18th August 1950. I have records of A1, A2, A3 and V2s on Stockton shed and these were mostly due to failures on trains via the coast route. Sorry I have no record of Sir Nigel on this shed.

Question 3
A picture has been uploaded to my Yahoo photo group with this caption. Can anyone help the photographer?
A rather grubby 60012 Commonwealth of Australia has just passed Apperley Bridge and Rawdon going north from Leeds on 13/7/63. I have never been able to find out details of this train and don't recollect ever seeing a pic of an A4 working a service train over the S&C at this period.
Answer
On the 13th July 1963 60012 was on the 09.30 St Pancras - Glasgow St Enoch and worked this train from Leeds - Glasgow. It had reached Leeds the previous day over the S & C. This was a relief to the Thames Clyde and A3s usually worked it. At this time the 10.10 Dn Thames Clyde was also usually A3 worked but A1s were not uncommon on both trains. Other A4s used over the S & C around that time were 60002 and 60011.

Question 1
I have been trying to find information about A3 Lemberg (xmas eve)early sixties, this loco worked Newcastle-Liverpool throughout owing to booked loco failing at Leeds, resulting in the A3 being stabled at Edge-Hill shed over Xmas.(it returned to the eastern region a few days later(light-loco)with a set of Leeds men.
Answer
Question 2
A friend has been going through his deceased father's negative archive and has come across the following three shots which show (in reversed order) 60015 Quicksilver coming off Haymarket shed to rescue a failed eastbound BRCW Type 2 (later class 26) and tow it and its train into Waverley station (presumably). The date is 2nd June 1962 by which time The Elizabethan was nominally Deltic hauled, so it's not clear how a 34A A4 arrived in Edinburgh, unless of course it had had to stand in for a failed Deltic on the down train.

Answer
60045 was the standby loco at Darlington on the 24th December 1962 and took over the 16.42 Newcastle - Liverpool which it worked through to Liverpool. It spent Christmas Day on Edge Hill shed and then on Boxing day (26th) it worked the 22.35 Liverpool - York mail which it took as far as Leeds. Later that day (27th) it worked the 10.35 Leeds - Glasgow via Carlisle which it worked throughout. The next day 28th it worked a passenger train back to Leeds passing Carlisle at 01.05 on the 29th. Later that day it worked a freight from Leeds - York and then ran LE from York back to Darlington.
It was a very unusual trip out for a Darlington standby loco. I hope this is of interest to you.

I wonder if you can shed any light on this (incidentally there were two 34A A4s in Edinburgh this day, Mallard having worked in on the SLS/RCTS "Aberdeen Flyer").
Answer
The answer is simple - Quicksilver was sent to Edinburgh as standby loco for the Aberdeen Flyer. It worked from Kings Cross to Newcastle on the 11.00 Kings Cross - Edinburgh and then Gateshead worked it forward to Edinburgh on the Evening Talisman. This was on the 1st June.
On the 2nd and 3rd it was standby on Haymarket shed and on the 4th it worked an Edinburgh - Newcastle train but Gateshead turned it round and it worked back to Edinburgh on the Dn Anglo Scottish Car Carrier. It then worked overnight LE from Edinburgh - Newcastle. I did not know about its little trip out to rescue the cl 26.

Miscellaneous Information No 44 - 2009 Summary
Friday 01 January 2010 - 23:13:02
Another year has passed and although I have not put many articles on this web site I am continuing to put workings on my project on a daily basis. There is no letting up of the information coming in and long may it continue.
I have started to do a monthly article for the Coupe News which is a free magazine devoted to anyone interested in the Pullman Car Company. This is available online at http://www.semgonline.com/coach/coupe/index.html. This is well worth a look and you can subscribe by contacting Terry at Email: pullmancarservices@yahoo.co.uk.
I have also taken up the post of Archivist for the Gresley Society and am now cataloguing the items in the Archive. The collection is located in Doncaster and when I finish this achive will be available by appointment for research purposes. The items are so valuable that they will not be loaned out. This job should be finished by the Summer but it means that I will not be able to devote as much time to my own project as I would like.
Questions on workings are still coming in and as some are very interesting I propose to put some of them on this web page where I think readers will find them interesting.
Readers are reminded that my database is on a stand alone machine for security purposes and therefore cannot be accessed. I am however delighted to supply any reasonable amount of information if asked.

Miscellaneous Information No 43 - June 2009 update
Friday 10 July 2009 - 15:44:19
I have not put any articles on this web site for a while mainly because I am adding about 50 workings per day to the site and to be honest I cannot think of anything unusual to do an article about.
On the other hand I have seen an increase in queries from people who have been on the web site and have questions to ask. I am delighted to supply any information and answer any questions that I can. Please keep them coming as it all adds interest to our hobby. If you have a specific topic that you think could be the subject of an article then let me know.
I am always looking for fresh information so if you have access to notebooks from steam days I would love to hear from you. The decade I have most information about is the 1930s which is surprising and the least is the 1920s which is to be expected.
One notable landmark reached recently is the fact that I now have over 4000 entries for Flying Scotsman (4114) and Royal Lancer (4020) with Minoru coming along next with (3941).

Miscellaneous Information No 42 - Last regular steam working in Newcastle
Saturday 14 February 2009 - 21:42:12
The last regular steam working in the Newcastle area was the 16.30 Newcastle - Berwick. The diagram was that the loco worked from Edinburgh to Berwick then worked a Berwick - Newcastle train arriving at 09.21. The loco was serviced at Gateshead then worked the 16.30 to berwick. After a wait in Berwick it went forward to Edinburgh on a local. The diagram changed over the years and in 1962 the Up working was TW2 a Tweedmouth steam diagram and the return was Edinburgh DSL 2 diagram. However it was steam in both directions most days. By the end of the steam era the diagram was rarely kept to and to illustrate this I am listing the workings I have for June to early September 1964 when the steam finished on this working.

Miscellaneous Information No 41 - A1s to London
Friday 13 February 2009 - 20:17:45
The recent visit to Kings Cross of 60163 Tornado made me wonder when the last A1 worked into Kings Cross. It was immediately apparent that April and May 1964 saw the last visits to the capital and I am listing the visits during those months that I have on my system. If anyone knows of other visits I would be pleased to hear from them.
April 4th - 60114 Doncaster standby and took over the Up Yorkshire Pullman to Kings Cross
April 20th - 60114 Up Tees Tyne Pullman into Kings Cross
April 24th - 60117 Up Yorkshire Pullman past Doncaster - I am not certain if it got all the way
April 28th - 60121 - towed 60106 up to Hornsey for a railtour from Kings Cross - Doncaster on the 2nd May
May 8th - 60118 worked a rugby spl into Kings Cross
Also on the 8th 60130 was on another rugby spl through Newark but I do not know whether this also got through to Kings Cross.
I have many working of A1s in the south after these dates but no definate sightings south of Peterborough.

Also on the 8th 60130 was on another rugby spl through Newark but I do not know whether this also got through to Kings Cross.
